Pink Hits the Spot!

Have you ever heard of a dog masquerading as a heating pad? The ancient breed Xoloitzcuintli has a 3500-year history of doing just that in the Ancient Aztec cultures. When I learned of this, I bought a toy Xolo to put around my neck where I have chronic pain from Fibromyalgia and appropriately named her Toaster.

In November 2009, Toaster had a sudden onset of severe back pain and ended up in the ER. This was the first time she ever had this problem. After the ER, we went to the vet for a check up a few days later. Toaster was a bit less flared up, so we were advised to apply heat to Toaster’s back. Upon coming home, Toaster went directly to the couch. I placed a blanket on top of her and went to heat a wet towel in the microwave to place on her back.

Of course, Pink, Toaster’s hairless daughter, instinctively knew how she could help Toaster and before I could get the towel out of the microwave, I found Pink sitting right on Toaster’s back where her pain is! I have NEVER seen Pink do this before or since, even when Toaster has had this blanket on her at other times. None of this was initiated, commanded, or choreographed by me! See some pictures here.

I was so moved by Pink. And so was Toaster. Pink actually put her paw around Toaster’s neck, too. That was really touching. It shouldn’t surprise me, given their history and my own experience, but there it really was-even animal to animal. Instinctively and lovingly, Pink intended to ease Toaster’s pain. What an amazing dog...and powerful testimony of the healing power of Xolos.

Now Toaster’s best and favorite treatment modality for her chronic pain, pictured on the back, is Pink in action. Although the resolution is poor (because I used my cell phone, which was right at my fingertips, to catch this moment), you can clearly witness Pink’s intent to help Toaster in the ancient Xolo way.

My only question is... do I have to share Pink with Toaster now?! - Nancy Gordon

"I hurt my back yesterday sawing branches. Laney spent the night making my back feel better.. so happy to have a Xolo!" Karen, January 2010

“Laney is a great girl and has fit in the family quite well. She is smart, loving and very playful. It's taken a bit for her to be trusting of others, but she's getting there. She is fun to work with and train. She is my little shadow: a few times I've called her to come only to find she has been right next to me! Also she is learning to hug, (sit around my neck). She is so warm and will curl up against my back, which feels very good.” ~KL 2009
