Everything you always wanted to know but were afraid to ask!
1. What Breed is she?
Toaster, born in 1999, is a rare breed called a Xoloitzcuintli (Xolo) or Mexican Hairless. Pink is her hairless daughter, born in 2002.
2.But Toaster has hair???
Yes, she is a hairy Mexican!
Xolos are either coated like Toaster or hairless like Pink. Toaster is 13.5” which makes her a large toy.She weighs 14lbs.
Pink is a small toy, and weighs 9.5 lbs.
3.How old are they?
Toaster was born March 21, 1999 My lucky day. sign: Ram
Pink was born May 25, 2002. My second lucky day. sign: Gemini
4. What does the vest they wear mean?
It means they are both certified service dogs, and are allowed access to any public place, included in “no animals allowed” housing.
5. What does she do; I have never seen a service dog so small!
It all depends on what the needs are of the owner. I couldn’t very well put a Golden Retriever on my neck! But if you want to see a list of the words/commands that Toaster understands, click here.
6. She does WHAT????
Toaster and Pink relieve my chronic muscle pain by serving as a 24/7 hot neck wrap that doesn’t need to be microwaved! And, at 14 lbs, Toaster provides traction on my neck while she does it!
Xolos date back 3500 years to the ancient Aztec and South American cultures where they were highly regard as spiritual healers with mystical powers. Because they are hairless, they emit a lot of heat and body warmth.
7. No kidding- I’ve never seen that!
Well, you will now! Toaster is the new star of Animal Planet’s series “THAT’S MY BABY!” The episode, Toaster, is about Toaster’s pregnancy and whelping of her first litter, and our story of how she helps me relieve chronic pain of Fibromyalgia, AND how she birthed her own greeting card line as well as a litter of puppies! She delivered 4 puppies on May 25, 2002, a male and female coated, and a male and female hairless (Pink is the female hairless).
Toaster has also birthed a program placing Xolos with individuals with chronic pain which responds to heat, called Xolos for Chronic Pain Relief ™ (X-CPR™)
All her “pop tarts” were placed with people with Fibromyalgia around the country, except for Pink, who was pick of the litter and went to the breeder, but was destined to be returned to Toaster and I because of a bad knee problem.
Pink's knee repair surgery was unsuccessful, hence her amputation at 1 yr old. No worries, Pink doesn't let anything stop her from being a happy playmate and service dog. She runs as fast as her mama Toaster. And even faster than her human mama.
8. Why do you have TWO service dogs?
Well, it didn’t start out that way, but after Pink returned because of her knee, Toaster and I couldn’t part with her again. Pink ended up requiring a leg amputation because of her knee, and has been an incredible inspiration to me about moving past your limitations.
Her middle name is Golden because she retrieves better than any Golden Retriever I know of. She knows 14 items by name, and will get the cell phone when it rings without a command! For this, she won best trick at a dog contest.
Pink, being completely hairless, is much hotter than Toaster, and thus provides a hotter heating pad. She is much lighter, however, so she cannot provide the traction. So, when I need traction and can be helped with moderate heat, I use Toaster. When I need fast, hot heat, I use Pink, but sacrifice the traction. If I have pain anywhere else besides my neck, I can usually position them there.
Both of them are live, 24/7 “HOT dog heating pads” who don’t need to be microwaved!
